Ex-Tiger Signs with Royals, Adding Fuel to AL Central Rivalry

The battle for AL Central supremacy just got a little more personal.

The Kansas City Royals announced Wednesday the signing of former Detroit Tigers All-Star Jeimer Candelario, bringing a familiar face back to the division in a move that’s already drawing plenty of attention. The veteran third baseman inked a one-year deal worth $8 million, with performance-based incentives that could push the total higher.

Candelario, 31, spent five seasons with the Tigers from 2017 to 2022 and was one of the team’s most consistent offensive producers during his tenure. Known for his glove work at third and occasional power at the plate, he earned All-Star recognition in 2021 while batting .271 with 16 home runs and 67 RBIs.

Now, after recent stints with the Washington Nationals and Chicago Cubs, Candelario is set to return to the AL Central—only this time, in royal blue.

“I’m excited for the opportunity,” Candelario said during his introductory press conference in Kansas City. “I know the division well, I know the pitchers, and I’m looking forward to competing. Especially against Detroit.”

That last comment didn’t go unnoticed by Tigers fans or players.

Detroit manager A.J. Hinch acknowledged the move before Wednesday’s game, saying, “Jeimer was a big part of our clubhouse for years. It’ll be strange seeing him on the other side, but we wish him the best—except, of course, when we play him.”

The Royals, currently in the thick of the AL Central race, hope that Candelario’s veteran presence can bolster their infield depth and bring added leadership to a young roster. He is expected to platoon at third base and DH while mentoring rising stars like Bobby Witt Jr.

For Candelario, the move also represents a shot at proving he still has plenty left in the tank.

“I’ve still got that fire,” he said. “And trust me, playing Detroit again? That’s going to be fun.”

The Tigers and Royals will meet for a three-game series in Detroit later this month—mark your calendars.
