Could the Yankees Target the Mets’ Young Infielder?
The 2025 season could be a pivotal one for Brett Baty. Once a highly regarded prospect in the Mets’ system, Baty now finds himself in a precarious position following the breakout of Mark Vientos and the re-signing of Pete Alonso. With his role in Queens uncertain, speculation is growing that a change of scenery might be in his best interest.
And if the Mets do put him on the trade block, one intriguing possibility has emerged—the New York Yankees.
Does Baty Fit the Yankees’ Needs?
The Yankees have an obvious hole at third base, and many believe they’ll make a move before Opening Day to address it. Given their need for an infield upgrade, Baty could be a potential solution—if the Mets are willing to deal with their crosstown rivals.
Baty, still just 25 years old, possesses plenty of raw talent despite his struggles at the major league level. While his .607 career OPS leaves room for improvement, his pedigree as a former top prospect suggests there’s still untapped potential.
A report from Bleacher Report’s Zachary D. Rymer highlighted Baty as a possible trade candidate and even named the Yankees as a team that should be interested.
“Teams were reportedly calling about Baty even before the Mets re-upped with Alonso,” Rymer wrote. “Assuming he’s even more available now, the Yankees, Brewers, and Cubs are three contenders that ought to have interest.”
Will the Mets Actually Trade Him?
Even with Baty’s unclear role, the Mets may hesitate to part ways with him too soon. They could opt to keep him around as a depth piece, allowing him to continue developing in the minors or serve as insurance in case of injuries.
Additionally, trading him to the Yankees comes with its own complications. A deal between the two New York teams is always tricky, as neither side wants to risk handing their city rival a future star. If the Mets still believe in Baty’s long-term upside, they may prefer to move him outside of the American League East—or hold onto him altogether.

While Baty’s future remains uncertain, the Yankees’ need at third base makes them a logical landing spot—at least on paper. However, the Mets’ willingness to deal him, especially to their crosstown rivals, remains a major question.
