Fans Slam Dan Campbell as One of NFL’s Most Overrated Coaches

Despite leading the Detroit Lions to significant improvements, head coach Dan Campbell has been ranked as one of the NFL’s most overrated coaches, landing at No. 6 on the list. According to Action Network’s Alicia Grimes, the ranking is based on social media metrics, but many fans believe it’s unfair given Campbell’s transformative impact on the Lions.

In just a few years, Campbell has turned the Lions from a 3-13-1 team in 2021 to a Super Bowl contender, with winning seasons in 2022, 2023, and an impressive 15-2 record in 2024. However, following a disappointing playoff exit in 2024, where injuries took a toll on the team, critics were quick to point fingers at Campbell, despite the circumstances.

The list of overrated coaches includes names like Mike Tomlin, Sean Payton, and Kyle Shanahan, which shows how high Campbell’s profile has risen despite the criticism. Yet, many argue that the criticism is misplaced, as even the best coaches can’t overcome injuries that decimate their roster.

Looking forward, Campbell remains unfazed by the rankings. With a healthy team and another strong offseason under GM Brad Holmes, the Lions are poised to continue their success in 2025. If Campbell can finally lead the Lions to the Super Bowl, those critics will quickly shift their focus to praising his accomplishments.
