A federal judge has delayed the Trump administration’s buyout deadline for federal workers until at least Monday. The original deadline was set for Thursday, but the judge’s ruling pushes it back, with another hearing scheduled for Monday.
The buyout offer, which was sent to federal employees on January 28, allowed them to resign with the promise of months of full pay. However, the offer was met with controversy, with some arguing that it was an attempt to clear out positions across federal agencies to refill with new hires “on an ideological basis”.
Over 40,000 federal employees, representing about 2% of the workforce, had accepted the buyout offer before the deadline was delayed. The judge’s decision to delay the deadline will give federal employees more time to consider the offer and its implications.
