It’s not often Detroit Lions fans get to exhale during an injury report — but Thursday brought a welcome change of pace. After a bruising week that left nearly the entire offensive line limping, Taylor Decker, Penei Sewell, and Dan Skipper were all back at practice in Allen Park.
That’s a major sigh of relief for coach Dan Campbell, who admitted earlier in the week he wasn’t sure if either of his starting tackles would suit up. Both Decker and Sewell had been nursing shoulder issues, and Skipper missed the first practice of the week with a back problem. Seeing them out there before Friday’s final session is a promising sign as Detroit gears up for Sunday’s road trip to Washington.
But, of course, it’s not all sunshine. The team’s left guard Christian Mahogany is done for now, placed on injured reserve after breaking a bone in his left leg against Minnesota. Campbell hinted that the Lions could shuffle the interior line — with Kayode Awosika expected to get first crack at left guard, while Trystan Colon and Graham Glasgow remain flexible options if things get tricky.
“We’ll start as we kind of ended that game,” Campbell said, noting he’s still experimenting with combinations. “Maybe we start moving some pieces around… at least a play or two and see what that looks like.”
Still missing from practice were RB Jacob Saylors, DL Pat O’Connor, and, most concerningly, All-Pro safety Kerby Joseph, whose lingering knee injury just won’t calm down. Campbell told 97.1 The Ticket that while there’s progress, “the irritation is not going away as fast as we had hoped.”
For a Lions team clawing for stability and health, Thursday’s update brings cautious optimism. The offensive wall looks ready to stand tall again — but the secondary might have to keep waiting for its cornerstone to return.
