First-Day Jolt: Rookie Ennis Rakestraw Suffers Chest Injury

Detroit’s rookie cornerback Ennis Rakestraw experienced a setback during the first day of training camp, exiting practice early with what was later diagnosed as a chest injury.

According to head coach Dan Campbell, Rakestraw took a hard play, immediately signaling discomfort in his chest. The Lions promptly sidelined him for evaluation, and he did not return to the field. Campbell called it a “day-to-day” situation but made it clear they’ll take no chances with the rookie’s health.

“He’s got some chest soreness,” Campbell explained. “We’re going to monitor it, get him checked out, and make sure he’s 100% before increasing his reps.”

Rakestraw, a second-round pick praised for his athleticism and football IQ, now faces a brief interruption in his crucial development period. Still, the Lions are optimistic: this appears to be a precautionary move rather than a long-term issue.

Campbell reassured fans that the team has depth across the secondary and fresh reps will come via other rookies and vets on the field. For Rakestraw, however, the plan is clear: stay smart, heal right, and take time to prepare for the real battles ahead.
