First Official Lions Injury Report for Divisional Round Reveals Key Concern

Detroit Faces Lingering Health Issues Ahead of Critical Playoff Clash

As the Detroit Lions prepare for their pivotal NFC Divisional Round matchup against the Washington Commanders, their first official injury report of the week has raised some concerns. While several key players are on the mend, the report highlights a few lingering issues that could impact Detroit’s playoff push.

Mixed News on Key Starters

The Lions’ week off following their first-round bye was largely beneficial, particularly for running back David Montgomery. After choosing to rehab his MCL injury rather than undergo surgery, Montgomery was a full participant in Wednesday’s practice. His return solidifies Detroit’s dynamic backfield duo with Jahmyr Gibbs, who admirably led the ground game during Montgomery’s absence.

However, not all updates were positive. Offensive guard Kevin Zeitler (hamstring) and defensive lineman Pat O’Connor (calf) both missed Wednesday’s practice. Zeitler’s absence is notable, as his veteran presence on the offensive line is critical in protecting quarterback Jared Goff and establishing the run game. Though head coach Dan Campbell remained cautiously optimistic, Zeitler’s inability to participate raises questions about his availability. Rookie Christian Mahogany may be next in line if Zeitler is sidelined.

Defensive back Ennis Rakestraw also missed practice due to a combination of a hamstring injury and illness. Still within his 21-day window to return from injured reserve, his absence complicates Detroit’s secondary depth, especially against Washington’s passing attack.

Taylor Decker’s Absence Downplayed

Perhaps the most eye-catching name on the injury report was star offensive tackle Taylor Decker, listed as a non-participant due to personal reasons. However, reports suggest this is “nothing to worry about.” Sources indicate Decker’s absence could be related to the birth of his child, hinting he will likely return in time for Saturday’s game.

Positive Signs for Terrion Arnold and Montgomery

There was good news regarding rookie cornerback Terrion Arnold, who was a full participant despite a foot injury sustained in Week 18. His ability to practice fully indicates he will be ready to bolster Detroit’s secondary.

Likewise, David Montgomery confirmed his readiness earlier in the week, and his full participation in practice solidifies his return. Head coach Dan Campbell emphasized Montgomery’s importance, calling him a “tone-setter” and “catalyst” for the offense. His physical running style will be critical against a Washington defense ranked 30th against the run.

What This Means for the Lions’ Playoff Outlook

While the Lions have the luxury of depth at several positions, injuries to key starters like Zeitler and Rakestraw could test Detroit’s resilience. Dan Campbell’s squad has thrived on grit and adaptability all season, and that will be necessary as they aim for their first-ever Super Bowl appearance.

If the offensive line remains intact and the defense holds strong, Detroit stands a strong chance of advancing. However, lingering injuries could become a factor in what promises to be a hard-fought battle against Washington.

All eyes will be on the Lions’ next practice report to see if these concerns ease before Saturday’s showdown.
