Darius Slay isn’t backing down from his belief that the Eagles would have handled the Lions in the playoffs. The former Detroit cornerback, who spent five seasons with the team before joining Philadelphia, recently appeared on the Pick a Side podcast, where he shared that he wanted to face the Lions because he saw their offense as “too cute.”
“A team I kind of wanted to play was the Detroit Lions,” Slay said. “Their defense was physical, but they offense was a cute offense. You know what I’m saying? We call it cute because they did a lot of trick plays, a lot of this and a lot of that. We was like, ‘We’re going to knock that cute s**t out.’”
Slay took it a step further, comparing the Lions to a “gorilla at the zoo” while saying the Eagles would have dragged them into the “jungle” to test their toughness. “They were like one of them gorillas that just sit there and eat. No, we would bring their ass to the jungle and see if they can climb the same trees that we’re climbing,” he added.
While Slay made it clear he still loves Detroit, calling it his “second home,” he didn’t shy away from saying the Eagles were ready to physically dominate the Lions. “Man, somebody just needs to punch them,” Slay said. “And we were going to punch them.”
With the Eagles releasing Slay this offseason, a potential reunion with the Lions isn’t out of the question. The 34-year-old has already expressed interest in returning to Detroit, where he began his career as a second-round pick in 2013. Whether the Lions pursue a reunion remains to be seen, but Slay’s recent comments would certainly add some extra spice to a potential Week 1 matchup between the two teams.
