While some NFL teams still face questions at quarterback heading into the 2025 season, the Detroit Lions have no such concerns with Jared Goff firmly established as one of the league’s top signal-callers. Goff has started every game for Detroit over the past three seasons, leaving little room for backups to see meaningful action or build their résumés.
One such quarterback is Nate Sudfeld, who spent over two seasons with the Lions but was cut during the final roster reductions before the 2024 campaign. Since his release last August, Sudfeld has yet to latch on with another NFL team, and it looks increasingly unlikely he’ll find an opportunity anytime soon.
During his time with the Lions, Sudfeld rarely saw the field outside of preseason appearances. He played in just two regular-season games in 2022, recording a single sack for a seven-yard loss, and didn’t see any meaningful snaps afterward.
Originally drafted in the sixth round by Washington in 2016, Sudfeld got his first chance to play during the final game of the 2017 season with the Philadelphia Eagles. In that debut, he made an impressive mark by completing 83% of his passes (19 of 23), briefly setting an NFL record for the highest completion percentage in a first career start since 1968.
Overall, Sudfeld appeared in just six regular-season games during his NFL career, two of which came with Detroit. Given that no teams have shown interest this offseason and training camps are fast approaching, it seems unlikely the veteran quarterback will find a new team before the 2025 season begins — if at all.
