Former Lions QB Teddy Bridgewater Suspended in Coaching Role Over Benefits Probe

It hasn’t been long since Teddy Bridgewater wrapped up his NFL career and stepped into the world of high school coaching—but drama has already found him. The former Detroit Lions quarterback, who briefly came out of retirement last season to give the Lions some veteran depth behind Jared Goff, is now suspended from his role at Miami Northwestern High School.

The reason? An investigation into impermissible benefits tied to his coaching. Yeah, not exactly the smooth start he probably hoped for.

Bridgewater didn’t take the suspension quietly. He jumped on Facebook and made it clear he’s not backing down, saying if he has to coach his team from the bleachers, so be it. He even pointed out that he could technically go coach somewhere else—but he’s sticking with his squad. Loyalty matters.

The situation has sparked speculation about whether this could push Bridgewater back toward the NFL, especially if the suspension ends up dragging out. After all, he’s still got the skill to serve as a capable backup, and a return to Detroit or elsewhere wouldn’t be that crazy.

But make no mistake—Bridgewater seems dead set on making this coaching thing work. He chose to walk away from the league to mentor young players and build something from the ground up. Even with the controversy swirling, he’s not planning to abandon that mission.

It’s worth noting that high school football isn’t exactly a clean game. There’s a long history of schools pushing boundaries to stay competitive, and policing every move is next to impossible. So while this isn’t ideal, it’s also not the biggest scandal you’ll ever hear about.

For now, Teddy’s sticking to his message: he’s not going anywhere. Suspension or not, he’s riding with his team.
