All offseason, fans and analysts have debated how the Detroit Lions offense will look now that Ben Johnson is coaching the Chicago Bears. But while Johnson’s departure made headlines, there’s a key figure still in place — and he’s the one who helped build the offensive identity in the first place: Dan Campbell.
Remember back in 2021 when the Lions let go of Anthony Lynn as play-caller? It was Campbell who took over and changed the direction of the team’s offense. Johnson eventually joined forces with him, but it was Campbell who laid the foundation.
FOX Sports analyst and former offensive lineman Mark Schlereth reminded everyone of that on FS1’s Breakfast Ball. He pointed out that Campbell hasn’t just been a rah-rah guy on the sidelines — he’s had his fingerprints all over the playbook.
“Dan understands that offense,” Schlereth said. “He’s very involved. The way they run it, the way they use personnel — that’s Dan. He’s smart with the X’s and O’s. He’ll be even more hands-on now to keep that standard.”
So while Johnson played a big role, it was Campbell who gave him the keys — and don’t forget, he helped design the car in the first place.
As for the current Lions roster? It’s loaded. Analyst Danny Parkins added that Detroit is built to thrive, even with a new play-caller.
“You’ve got a top-tier O-line, a sharp veteran QB in Jared Goff, a true WR1, an elite tight end, a strong backfield, and Jameson Williams’ speed. That’s a coordinator’s dream,” Parkins said.
Bottom line: With Campbell still guiding the ship, Detroit’s offense isn’t expected to fall off. The Lions are still deep in their Super Bowl window — and Campbell isn’t about to let his side of the ball take a step back.
