Former Pittsburgh QB Confirmed as New York’s New Starter

Jets Name Justin Fields as 2025 Starter, Moving Forward Without Zach Wilson
The New York Jets have officially named Justin Fields their starting quarterback for the 2025 season, putting an end to speculation about their plans at the position. After acquiring Fields from the Pittsburgh Steelers this offseason, the Jets are betting on his potential to lead the team in a make-or-break year.

“We believe Justin is the starter,” Jets GM Darren Mougey said on Sunday. “We believe in Justin. We believe we can win with Justin. We’re excited about his potential.”

This decision means the Jets are moving forward without Zach Wilson, the former No. 2 overall pick, who was traded earlier this offseason. It also signals their confidence in Fields despite his up-and-down career so far.

A Rocky Road for Fields
Fields, a former first-round pick of the Chicago Bears, is now on his third team in three seasons. After a rocky tenure in Chicago, he was traded to the Steelers in 2024, where he started six games, posting a 4-2 record before losing the job to Russell Wilson. Pittsburgh then opted to move on from both quarterbacks, allowing Wilson to sign with the New York Giants, while trading Fields to the Jets.

Despite the constant movement, Jets head coach Aaron Glenn believes Fields is ready for a breakout year.

“He has a quiet confidence about himself,” Glenn told NFL Media’s Judy Battista. “He can really throw the deep ball well. Obviously, his legs are dynamic, not just in college but in the NFL. I just think he’s ready to break out as a top-notch quarterback.”

What’s Next for the Jets?
With Fields locked in as QB1, the Jets can focus on building around him. The team has been aggressive in bolstering the offensive line and adding weapons to ensure Fields has a strong supporting cast.

However, questions remain. Fields has shown flashes of brilliance, but consistency has been an issue. He has struggled with decision-making, accuracy, and pocket awareness, leading to skepticism about whether he can be the long-term answer.

If Fields struggles early in the season, the Jets could be forced to reevaluate their quarterback situation. But for now, they’re all in on Fields, giving him a chance to prove he belongs as a franchise QB.
