With spring training kicking off in less than a month, former Red Sox first baseman Dominic Smith has jumped ship within the AL East and signed a minor league deal with the Yankees. After filling in for the injured Triston Casas last season, Smith played 84 games for Boston, hitting 6 home runs, driving in 34 runs, and posting a .237 batting average. But once Casas got healthy in August, Smith was let go and later picked up by Cincinnati, where his struggles continued before he got sent to the minors.
Smith’s career has had its ups and downs. He had his best season in 2020 with the Mets, where he hit .316 and even got MVP votes. But now, with the Yankees stacking up at first base this offseason (hello, Paul Goldschmidt and Cody Bellinger), Smith is likely starting 2025 in the minors. Still, he could get a shot later in the season if the Yankees need a veteran bat off the bench.
Meanwhile, the Red Sox are gearing up for the season with Triston Casas set to hold down first base, despite swirling trade rumors all offseason.
