Former Signal-Caller Gives Verdict on Jameis Winston Move

The New York Giants finally made a quarterback move, signing veteran Jameis Winston to a two-year deal worth $8 million (with incentives pushing it up to $16 million). At the very least, Winston provides an experienced backup and a potential mentor for a rookie QB. But for now, it’s just him and Tommy DeVito in the Giants’ quarterback room.

This signing doesn’t necessarily reveal the team’s draft strategy, but it does give them some flexibility. Former NFL quarterback Robert Griffin III praised the move, saying it allows the Giants to go in multiple directions.

“The Giants signing Jameis Winston to a 2-year deal for $8 million gives them the FLEXIBILITY OF A GYMNAST if they draft Cam Ward, Shedeur Sanders, or no one at QB,” Griffin posted. “Don’t have to rush the young QB into action if he isn’t ready and can roll with Jameis if the QB you want isn’t there.”

Winston is a different kind of signing compared to big names like Aaron Rodgers or Russell Wilson, who would likely command more money and demand a starting role. Rodgers isn’t coming to New York to sit on the bench, and Wilson spent last season holding off Justin Fields for the Steelers’ starting job.

Winston, on the other hand, is a known quantity—a talented but inconsistent gunslinger who can throw both highlight-reel touchdowns and head-scratching interceptions. That’s been his reputation over the last few years as a backup who occasionally steps in and makes things exciting (for better or worse).

For the Giants, this move buys them time. If they draft a rookie, Winston can start until he’s ready. If they don’t, Winston can bridge the gap. Either way, they don’t have to overpay for a veteran. It’s not the flashiest move, but it gives New York options.

Now, the big question: Will the Giants grab a QB in the draft, or are they sticking with Winston and DeVito? We’ll find out soon enough.
