Commanders’ Frankie Luvu Fined for Missed Penalties Against Lions
In a game filled with controversy, Commanders linebacker Frankie Luvu found himself the subject of multiple disciplinary actions after a win over the Detroit Lions. Luvu avoided penalties during the game, but the league’s disciplinary process didn’t miss his infractions.
The first came after Luvu delivered a helmet-to-helmet hit on Lions quarterback Jared Goff following an interception, which was returned for a touchdown. Had the penalty been called, the touchdown would’ve been erased (though the interception would’ve stood). The hit left Goff needing a concussion check, causing him to miss Detroit’s next offensive series. For this violation, Luvu was fined $16,883.
Later in the game, Luvu made a controversial hip-drop tackle on Detroit running back Jahmyr Gibbs, which also went unflagged but resulted in another fine of $16,883. Combined, Luvu’s fines for the game totaled $33,766, bringing attention to missed calls that ultimately led to penalties after the fact.
