A near-miss in Liverpool’s transfer history
Liverpool fans have heard plenty of “what could have been” stories when it comes to transfers. From Jan Oblak almost replacing Alisson to Sami Khedira nearly joining Anfield, the Reds’ scouting radar has always been buzzing. But one story that resurfaced recently is Bobby Zamora’s — and it’s tinged with regret.
The £10m offer that never was
Back in 2010, when Roy Hodgson left Fulham for Liverpool, the Reds put £10m on the table for striker Bobby Zamora. Spurs, led by Harry Redknapp, matched the bid too. On paper, it was a dream opportunity — a chance to step onto one of football’s biggest stages.
But Zamora said no. Why? Family. He had just welcomed twins into his life and didn’t want to uproot them. At the time, it felt like the sensible choice. In hindsight, he now calls it one of his biggest regrets in football.
“That is my genuine regret in football… that I didn’t just go to Liverpool and sign for five years there, stupid.” – Bobby Zamora
Would Zamora have changed Liverpool’s fortunes?
Let’s be honest — Zamora wasn’t exactly in the Golden Boot conversation. A solid striker, yes. An Anfield icon-in-the-making? Maybe not. But his strong chemistry with Hodgson at Fulham could’ve helped Liverpool adapt better to the manager’s style. And in football, those little tweaks sometimes change everything.
The “what if” that lingers
In 89 games under Hodgson at Fulham, Zamora scored 23 goals and provided 15 assists. Respectable numbers. Would that have translated at Liverpool? We’ll never know. Instead, his decision to stay in London left him with a respectable career… but also a sense of what might have been.
Because in football, missed transfers don’t just vanish into history — they live on as “what ifs” that fans and players alike can’t help but revisit.
