From L.A. to Detroit: Goff Breaks Silence on Trade That Changed His Career

Detroit – In the Season 2 premiere of Netflix’s Quarterback, Lions quarterback Jared Goff delivered a raw and emotional reveal about the blockbuster trade that sent him from the Los Angeles Rams to the Detroit Lions in January 2021.

He says he felt “betrayed” after Rams coach Sean McVay called him just three weeks after the 2020 season—without any warning—and informed him that he was being traded. Within 30 seconds of the phone call, the deal was public on Twitter  .

> “You feel like you’ve been betrayed, or like you’re not wanted,” Goff said, fighting back tears. “There was no conversation… no maturity.”

It marked what Goff described as his “first real taste of true adversity.” But the narrative transformed quickly. A heartfelt call from Lions GM Brad Holmes and head coach Dan Campbell reignited Goff’s confidence and sense of belonging in Detroit  .

> “This is what it feels like to truly be wanted and to have these guys behind you.”

Since relocating, Goff has carved out a redemption arc few anticipated. He led Detroit to its first NFC North title in 30 years, earned Pro Bowl honors, secured a four-year, $212 million extension, and helped the team to a 15–2 record in 2024—all while nearly reaching the Super Bowl  .

Goff reflected: “A lot of people saw it as… my career had died… for me, I saw it as what an incredible opportunity”  .

As the season advances, Detroit’s early momentum continues—capped by a wild-card playoff win over his former team in 2023  . Next up: an emotional showdown on Dec. 14 when the Lions revisit the Rams, completing a full-circle moment in Goff’s journey  .
