From Rival to Lion: Tyleik Williams Puts Michigan Hate Aside for NFL Dream

The Detroit Lions have welcomed a fresh batch of players from the 2025 NFL Draft — and one of them is already making headlines for his honesty. Defensive lineman Tyleik Williams, drafted 28th overall out of Ohio State, didn’t hide his feelings about his new home state.

“It’s definitely crazy,” Williams said after his official team introduction. “I’ve learned to hate this state for the last four years.”

Of course, that’s no surprise — the Michigan-Ohio State rivalry is one of the most intense in college football. But Williams was quick to add that he’s thrilled to join the Lions. “Getting drafted, I’m just happy. I can put all that behind me,” he said. “Of course, I’m still Team Up North. I’m still not going to say it, but I’m just happy I’m here.”

As Williams trades in his scarlet and gray for Honolulu blue, he’ll bring some added fire to the field — especially when Detroit lines up against teams like the Chargers, now coached by former Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh.

Draft analysts had mixed reactions to Detroit’s 2025 class. NFL.com’s Chad Reuter gave the Lions a “B,” noting they passed on an edge rusher or offensive lineman in the first round to take Williams. ESPN’s Mel Kiper Jr. was less impressed, handing out a “C+” and pointing to the team’s need for pass-rush help after struggling last season when Aidan Hutchinson went down with a leg injury.

Regardless of the grades, the Lions are betting on Williams’ toughness and upside. And while his college loyalties may still burn bright, Williams is ready to give his all in Detroit.
