From Tallahassee to New York? Giants May Be Eyeing Former FSU Star

The New York Giants have been busy this offseason, especially when it comes to shaking up their quarterback situation—bringing in Jameis Winston and Russell Wilson to compete for the starting spot, with possibly a rookie coming in soon too.

But that might not be the end of their free agent shopping spree. ESPN’s Peter Schrager reported that defensive lineman DeMarcus Walker, a former Florida State standout, recently visited the team. Walker’s currently a free agent and has also drawn interest from the New Orleans Saints.

He was released by the Chicago Bears in February to save some cap space, even though he just had one of the best seasons of his career—putting up 47 tackles, seven tackles for loss, 3.5 sacks, and 16 QB hits in 17 starts. His biggest game was against the Commanders, where he racked up eight tackles.

Walker, now 30, was drafted by the Broncos back in 2017 and has also played for the Texans, Titans, and Bears. He actually has some history with the Giants’ new defensive coordinator, Shane Bowen, from their time together in Tennessee.

Over his NFL career, Walker has played in 100 games, made 42 starts, and totaled 191 tackles, 26.5 sacks, and a handful of other defensive plays.

Throwback to His FSU Days

Walker was a beast at Florida State. He was part of the team that won the last-ever BCS National Championship in 2014. He became a full-time starter in 2015 and absolutely dominated in his final two seasons. In 2016 alone, he had 16 sacks, 22 tackles for loss, and earned All-American and All-ACC honors. He left FSU ranked third all-time in both sacks (28.5) and tackles for loss (45).

FSU Players Still Making Noise in the NFL

Here are some other former Seminoles currently in the league:

Trey Benson, Jammie Robinson, and Josh Sweat are all with the Cardinals.

Keon Coleman’s with the Bills.

Dustin Hopkins is kicking for the Browns.

Several others are scattered across teams like the Texans, Chargers, Rams, Jets, and more.

Walker could be the latest FSU alum to find a new NFL home soon—maybe in New York.
