From Tomlin to Shanahan: Who Tops the NFL’s Longest-Tenured Coaches List for 2025?

The 2025 offseason saw plenty of head coaching shakeups across the NFL, with the Bears, Jets, Saints, Cowboys, Jaguars, Raiders, and Patriots all making changes on the sidelines. Matt Eberflus, Robert Saleh, and Dennis Allen quickly found new defensive coordinator jobs, but other ousted coaches like Mike McCarthy and Doug Pederson remain unemployed heading into the season.

McCarthy, 61, withdrew from the Saints’ search and is expected to sit out at least one year, mirroring the gap between his Packers and Cowboys stints. Meanwhile, Pederson couldn’t land an offensive coordinator role despite interest, leaving the Super Bowl-winning coach on the sidelines for 2025. Antonio Pierce and Jerod Mayo will also spend the year out of football after short-lived head coaching runs.

Despite the recent turnover, many of the NFL’s longest-tenured coaches are still in place. Nine head coaches hired in 2020 or earlier will continue with their teams in 2025, including six in the AFC. Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin remains the NFL’s longest-serving coach, a title he claimed after Bill Belichick left the Patriots.

In the NFC, Sean McVay, Kyle Shanahan, and Matt LaFleur will keep their familiar roles. However, LaFleur, with two years left on his contract, won’t receive an early extension.
