BINGHAMTON, N.Y. (WBNG) – Girls’ flag football is growing, and Chenango Valley High School is helping lead the charge!
For the fourth year, Section IV teamed up with the New York Giants to host its annual girls’ flag football skills combine, bringing together over a dozen teams for a day of drills, learning, and inspiration.
“I love flag football, and I think everyone should play,” said Chenango Valley senior Madison Hubenthal. “Even if you’ve never thrown a football before, you can jump in and learn.”
This year’s event had some star power, too! Former Giants wide receiver Brandon London and current defensive end Casey Rogers—who’s originally from Syracuse—showed up to support the players. Rogers is pumped about the sport’s future.
“The history books for girls’ flag football are brand new and wide open,” he said. “It’s up to these girls to fill the pages.”
Players participated in a variety of drills, including receiving exercises and the 40-yard dash, all designed to help them sharpen their skills for the regular season.
“We take a lot of the drills we learn here and put them into practice,” Hubenthal added.
Kendra Williams, a sophomore from Chenango Forks, sees the event as a game-changer. “Sometimes on offense, some girls don’t know what they’re doing, so this helps everybody, and we just get better from there.”
This season, 17 school districts from Section IV will compete in varsity girls’ flag football, with nearly 200 teams hitting the field across New York State.
