Giants GM Joe Schoen Isn’t Feeling the NFL Draft Lottery Idea

Giants GM Joe Schoen made it very clear—he’s not a fan of the idea of turning the NFL Draft into a lottery system.

During an appearance on Up & Adams with Kay Adams, Schoen shot down the suggestion, saying teams who earn those top picks deserve them. “If you’re picking that high, it’s usually because you really need a difference-maker—especially at quarterback,” Schoen said. “That guy can turn a team around for 15 to 20 years. You shouldn’t leave that to chance.”

The topic came up after the NBA’s recent draft lottery, where the Dallas Mavericks won the first overall pick despite having just a 1.8% chance. That surprise win had people wondering if the NFL should consider doing something similar.

While Schoen admitted the Mavericks’ win was “pretty intriguing,” he’s not sold on using a lottery in football. He said he doesn’t follow the NBA closely but acknowledged it worked out great for Dallas—especially after they traded away Luka Doncic earlier this year.

Still, he doesn’t think the NFL should copy the NBA’s draft system. For Schoen, giving struggling teams a shot at a franchise-changing player—especially a QB—is way too important to gamble on.

So yeah, while the NBA lottery might’ve helped the Mavs, don’t expect Schoen to back any similar changes in the NFL anytime soon.
