NFL Draft analyst Todd McShay is going bold with his latest mock: he has the New York Giants making not one, but two big moves in Round 1.
First up at pick No. 3? Penn State edge rusher Abdul Carter — a player many see as one of the best in the draft. The Titans grabbed Cam Ward at No. 1, the Browns went with Travis Hunter at No. 2, and the Giants ended up with Carter, which is quickly becoming the popular (and smart) choice. McShay calls Carter a “blue chip” guy you just can’t pass up — even if the team needs a quarterback.
Imagine this defense: Carter, Brian Burns, and Kayvon Thibodeaux lining up on third downs. Offensive coordinators are gonna have nightmares. Giants writer Ed Valentine agrees — Carter’s the real deal and could totally change this defense.
But the real shocker? McShay has the Giants trading back into the first round to grab Alabama QB Jalen Milroe at pick No. 24. To get there, they send picks 34 and 65 to the Vikings.
Here’s the twist: McShay admits he doesn’t have a Round 1 grade on Milroe — and says no NFL evaluators he’s talked to do either. But Milroe’s been invited to the draft, which hints that someone’s ready to take him early. The league doesn’t want another awkward green room fall like Will Levis last year.
Milroe’s raw, but his athleticism is off the charts. McShay compares his situation to how the Bills developed Josh Allen — and with Brian Daboll at the helm, that’s not a crazy comparison. The key? No pressure to start right away. Russell Wilson and Jameis Winston are already in the room.
McShay’s co-host Steve Muench summed it up: if the Giants walk away with Carter and Milroe, fans are going to be pumped. He even joked he’d strut around like Conor McGregor.
There is risk, though. Milroe has the biggest boom-or-bust potential of any top QB in this class. And with Daboll on the hot seat, it’s fair to wonder if Milroe will get the time and coaching he needs.
Draft guru Matt Waldman is all-in on Milroe, though. He thinks Milroe might be the only QB in this class with real Super Bowl potential. Bold.
So yeah — it’s a wild swing. But one that’s starting to feel more and more possible.
