The New York Giants could be cooking up something exciting in their backfield heading into the 2025 season. With two very different styles but tons of potential, Cam Skattebo and Tyrone Tracy Jr. might be forming the next great “thunder and lightning” running back duo.
They’re still getting things figured out, but the upside is hard to miss. This could finally be the combo that helps the team move on from the Saquon Barkley era. Think of it like pairing brute force with finesse — both dangerous, just in different ways.
Cam Skattebo: The Workhorse
The Giants grabbed Skattebo in the 4th round (105th overall), and it might end up being a total steal. He tore it up at Arizona State, putting up 1,712 rushing yards and 21 touchdowns last season. Oh, and he added 543 receiving yards and 3 more scores through the air.
The guy is tough to take down and surprisingly smooth catching passes — basically, he’s a walking highlight reel.
Tyrone Tracy: The Speed Threat
Tracy showed some real promise in his rookie year, putting up 839 total yards and 5 touchdowns. Sure, ball security was an issue (4 fumbles and 6 dropped passes), but if he tightens that up, he could be a serious problem for defenses.
He’s got that quick-cut speed and can make defenders miss in space — perfect for third downs and big-play opportunities. If his hands get more reliable, his role could grow fast.
A Balanced Attack for Today’s NFL
Skattebo gives you that bruising style in short-yardage or red zone plays, while Tracy can spread the field with his quickness. Together, they give the Giants flexibility — power up the gut or speed around the edge, depending on what’s needed.
This offense might not have a ton of stars right now, but having a versatile, two-headed backfield like this could keep them competitive and unpredictable.
Training Camp Will Set the Tone
Of course, both guys still need to earn their roles in camp. Early signs point to the coaching staff being excited, though. Skattebo looks like the lead back for now, but Tracy’s snap count could jump depending on how much he improves as a pass catcher.
It’s not the flashiest backfield in the league, but it might be exactly what the Giants need to control games and wear down defenses.
