The New York Giants aren’t locking themselves into any specific position when it comes to their No. 3 overall pick in the upcoming NFL Draft. After a productive free agency, where they added two veteran quarterbacks, the team has plenty of flexibility when deciding how to use their top pick.
Schoen: “We’re Not Ruling Anything Out”
In a recent chat with Giants.com, GM Joe Schoen made it clear that the team is keeping its options open.
“We’re not done,” Schoen said. “We still want to upgrade. We have five picks in the top 105. We could go any position, so we’re not ruling any position out.”
Heading into the offseason, the Giants’ biggest concern was at quarterback. But after bringing in Russell Wilson and Jameis Winston, they don’t necessarily have to take a QB at No. 3. However, with Wilson at 36 on a one-year deal and Winston at 31 on a two-year deal, grabbing a young QB for the future is still on the table. Alternatively, they could go for the best player available and build around Wilson/Winston for immediate success.
Giants Leaning Toward a Best Player Available (BPA) Approach
Schoen also hinted that his draft strategy leans more toward picking the best talent rather than strictly filling a need.
“Since I’ve been here, we’ve tried to set it up on draft day that we could go play a game [that day]. I feel like we’re there now,” Schoen said. “That way you don’t get backed into a corner or force yourself to do anything.”
With the No. 3 pick, the Giants will be in a prime spot to grab a star. Some top names being thrown around include Miami QB Cam Ward, Colorado’s do-it-all CB/WR Travis Hunter, and Penn State pass-rusher Abdul Carter. Depending on what the Titans and Browns do at No. 1 and No. 2, the Giants could land any of these elite prospects.
Colorado QB Shedeur Sanders is also in the mix, though he’s generally ranked a bit lower than the other three. If Schoen wants to secure the future at QB, he could take Sanders, but if he’s sticking to a BPA approach, it would be tough to pass on Carter or Hunter, who are expected to make an immediate impact.
Bottom line: The Giants have options, and they’re keeping all doors open heading into draft night.
