How Russell Wilson & Jameis Winston Signings Shake Up the Giants’ Draft Plans
Ever since the Giants decided to move on from Daniel Jones late last season, everyone figured they’d be hunting for their next franchise quarterback in the 2025 NFL Draft.
But things got interesting when New York brought in two veteran QBs Super Bowl champ Russell Wilson and journeyman Jameis Winston earlier this month. So, what does that mean for their No. 3 overall pick?
Giants GM Joe Schoen recently addressed that question, saying the team has set itself up to have options on draft day.
“Since I’ve been here, we’ve always tried to make sure we could field a team if we had to play that day,” Schoen said. “I feel like we’re there now. That way, we’re not forced into making a pick out of desperation.”
He pointed out that the Giants were in a tough spot salary-cap-wise when he first took over, which led to some need-based drafting. But now? They’re in a position to take the best player available.
“We still want to upgrade,” Schoen said. “We have five picks in the top 105. We could go any position, so we’re not ruling anything out.”
Of course, this could all be a bit of draft-day poker from Schoen, but he’s got a point. With Wilson and Winston in the mix bringing a combined 286 career starts the Giants have some breathing room. They still need a long-term QB, but they’re not locked into that decision.
So, could they take a shot at a defensive stud like pass rusher Abdul Carter or two-way sensation and reigning Heisman winner Travis Hunter? Or do they still pounce on one of the draft’s top quarterbacks, like Cam Ward or Shedeur Sanders?
“We can go in any direction,” Schoen emphasized at the NFL’s Annual League Meetings.
The first round of the 2025 NFL Draft kicks off on April 24 at 8 p.m. ET. Buckle up things could get interesting.
