Giants Tap Jameis Winston as QB – But for How Long

The New York Giants have landed a new quarterback, but don’t expect him to be their long-term guy. Jameis Winston has agreed to a two-year, $8 million deal with the Giants, essentially serving as a bridge to whoever the team picks in the upcoming NFL Draft.

Winston, now 31, has bounced around the league, most recently with the Cleveland Browns, where he stepped in after Deshaun Watson’s season-ending injury. He had some bright moments but ultimately struggled with turnovers and was benched late in the season.

The Giants initially aimed higher, trying to lure Matthew Stafford with a massive $50 million-per-year offer, but he stayed with the Rams. They also had eyes on Aaron Rodgers, but that never materialized either. So, Winston became their best available veteran option.

Co-owner John Mara made it clear that the team’s top priority is finding their quarterback of the future. Right now, the Giants hold the No. 3 pick in the draft, and it’s almost certain they’ll select a young QB to develop behind Winston.

Why Winston?

Bringing in Winston gives the Giants a competent veteran who can start if needed, mentor a rookie, and—most importantly—help buy time for head coach Brian Daboll and GM Joe Schoen, who are under pressure to turn things around after last season’s 3-14 disaster.

For Winston, this is another chance to prove he can still be a viable starter in the NFL. Whether he actually gets that opportunity will depend on how the draft plays out.

At the very least, he gets a shot at New York—and he seems excited about it. He even posted “Start spreading the neWs ” on social media, referencing Frank Sinatra’s famous song about the city.

But make no mistake, the Giants aren’t done looking for their QB1 of the future. The draft will determine who really takes the reins in New York.
