Goff Tells Fans: ‘Ease Up’ – New OC Morton Isn’t Tearing Down the Playbook

Although the Detroit Lions are entering the 2025 season with a brand-new offensive coordinator—John Morton, replacing the highly praised Ben Johnson—quarterback Jared Goff wants fans and media to calm down. According to Goff, the changes have been subtle, measured, and manageable.

Goff’s Take on the Transition:

> “The transition to what we were doing last year to him… is a lot lesser than you guys are making it seem,” Goff said in mid‑camp press availability.
He added, “Some of it’s the exact same. Some is new, but it’s not that big a gap… It’s been a great transition—a fun challenge.”

Continuity is Key
Morton isn’t entirely new to Detroit—he served as the team’s passing-game coordinator in 2022. Goff noted that while Morton “just sounds different in my ear,” much of the offensive structure—formations, protections, cadence, and core plays—remains intact. “A lot of it we’re running exactly the same,” Goff emphasized.

Why This Matters
Lions fans feared a major slowdown after losing Ben Johnson, under whom Detroit led the league in points per game and became the NFL’s offensive juggernaut. But Goff’s early-camp feedback and Morton’s internal familiarity suggest the offense is swinging for continuity, not chaos.

With playmakers like Amon‑Ra St. Brown, Jahmyr Gibbs, Sam LaPorta, and Jameson Williams still in the fold, continuity at system level may be just what Detroit needs to maintain the momentum that led to a franchise-best 15–2 record in 2024.

Final Word:
Watchers of the Lions’ 2025 season shouldn’t expect a jarring change—at least not yet. With Goff leading a steady transition and Morton’s subtle tweaks layered over a familiar scheme, Detroit appears set to continue its upward trajectory without missing a beat.
