With the NFL Draft just weeks away, the New York Giants are still deciding between Colorado quarterback Shedeur Sanders, his teammate Travis Hunter, and Penn State edge rusher Abdul Carter for their third pick. The Cleveland Browns could make the decision easier by picking second, but all three players are still in the running, each with strong reasons to be chosen.
Carter, though, is a bit of a tricky fit for the Giants. Hunter could step in right away to play opposite Paulson Adebo, and is probably more talented than anyone on the Giants’ receiving squad except Malik Nabers. Sanders might sit out for a year, but the Giants definitely need a franchise quarterback. Carter, on the other hand, has solid competition at his position with Brian Burns and Kayvon Thibodeaux already locked in. That makes Carter a bit of a luxury pick for New York.
Adding to the uncertainty around Carter is his injury history. He played well through a shoulder issue last season and didn’t test due to a foot injury. While the injuries aren’t major, they raise some concerns, especially when Hunter and Carter are being viewed as equals. The risk of injury could be what swings the decision.
But on Thursday, Carter got some good news about his medicals just ahead of his visit with the Giants. Adam Schefter reported that Carter’s foot injury is healing up well and won’t require surgery, according to his agent Drew Rosenhaus. The injury shouldn’t be an issue for teams now, according to Rosenhaus.
With his health improving, Carter is feeling confident and has scheduled visits with just a few teams: the Titans, Patriots, Giants, and Browns. His meeting with New York started Thursday and will continue into Friday, giving the Giants a closer look at him before they make a final decision. While he might not make an immediate impact in 2025 due to the Giants’ strong pass rush, taking a chance on a top-tier pass rusher is hardly a bad move, especially now that his medicals are looking better. Fans can feel more assured about investing in him for the future.
