Greenland Bound: JD Vance’s Wife Ventures to the Land Trump Wanted to Own

Looks like Usha Vance, the wife of VP JD Vance, is heading to Greenland    a place Trump has made no secret about wanting the U.S. to control.

She’s set to visit the mineral-rich island from Thursday to Saturday, bringing one of her kids along as part of a U.S. delegation. The plan? Touring historical sites, learning about Greenlandic heritage, and attending the country’s big national dogsled race, the Avannaata Qimussersu. The event features dozens of mushers and hundreds of dogs, and Vance’s office hyped it up as a showcase of “speed, skill, and teamwork.”

Greenlandic and Danish media reported that Trump’s national security adviser, Mike Waltz, will be joining her on the trip. The White House and National Security Council haven’t commented yet.

Trump has been eyeing Greenland for years, even saying back in his first term that the U.S. should just buy it. Denmark, which technically governs Greenland, shut that idea down. But since returning to office, Trump has doubled down, insisting the U.S. will eventually take control of the massive Arctic island—though he claims it’s about national security, not expansionism.

In January, right after starting his second term, Trump straight-up said, “I think we will have it.” His son, Don Jr., even visited the U.S. military base there earlier this year. During a chat with NATO’s Secretary General, Trump downplayed Denmark’s claim to Greenland, saying, “A boat landed there 200 years ago or something, and they say they have rights to it. I don’t know if that’s true. I don’t think it is, actually.”

Greenland’s parliament isn’t having it. All five parties recently put out a joint statement rejecting Trump’s claim, while Denmark has reaffirmed Greenland’s right to declare independence if it ever chooses to.

Trump’s Greenland obsession is just one part of his broader views on territorial control. He’s also floated military intervention in Panama to retake the canal, suggested Canada should become the 51st U.S. state, and even pitched the idea of turning Gaza into a luxury beach resort.
