Grit and Gridiron: Tennessee WR Sees Himself as Natural Fit for Lions

Tennessee wide receiver Bru McCoy believes he would be a good fit for the Detroit Lions’ gritty culture. At 6-foot-3 and 230 pounds, McCoy is a big-bodied receiver who sees himself as a versatile threat in this year’s draft class.

“I really think it is kind of plug-and-play for me,” McCoy said. “Wherever a team sees me fit, I think I’m adaptable to whatever sort of system I could get into.”

McCoy’s injury history could be a concern for some teams, but not the Lions. His 2023 season at Tennessee was cut short by a fractured right ankle, and more recently, he left the Senior Bowl early due to a hamstring issue.

Despite these concerns, McCoy believes he can fit into any system. He has met with several teams, including the Lions, and sees himself playing for a team that values toughness.

“I think that there’s a similar demeanor when it comes to toughness,” McCoy said. “I think they demand a lot of their guys, they want them to be tough mentally and physically, and I think I would fit well into a program like that.”

Tennessee running back Dylan Sampson, a top prospect at his position, backs up McCoy’s claim. “From the moment I met Bru, I was a freshman, and he was working out with the Brick Squad… Man, everything he does, he does the right way,” Sampson said.

McCoy finished his final season at Tennessee with 39 catches for 472 yards and two touchdowns. The Lions are in the market for a wide receiver, and while McCoy’s numbers don’t jump off the screen, his demeanor fits the mold of a Dan Campbell player.

“I’m a guy with high character and somebody that wants to push himself to do his best,” McCoy said. “Someone that’s going to show up the same way every day. Work hard, very disciplined, and I think I’m not a guy that comes in and isn’t willing to do what it takes to go get an opportunity.”
