Cowboys Consider Ken Dorsey as Offensive Coordinator Amid Major Coaching and Draft Moves
The Dallas Cowboys are reportedly eyeing Ken Dorsey as a top candidate for their next offensive coordinator. Dorsey, who previously led productive offenses in Buffalo, appears to be a strong fit for Dallas’s focus on revitalizing their running game under new head coach Brian Schottenheimer.
At his introductory press conference, Schottenheimer emphasized the importance of establishing a dominant ground game in 2025. “We want to be able to run the ball,” said team owner Jerry Jones. “Everybody says that we want to run the ball and we want to stop the run, and certainly that’s what we want to do. That’s what great championship football teams do, and I know coach Schottenheimer wants to do that. I think it’s real important that we find in this hire a coach that’s going to be outstanding in the run game area.”
Dorsey’s experience aligns well with that vision. During his time with the Buffalo Bills, his offenses ranked seventh in the league for rushing yards per game in both 2022 (139.5) and 2023 (130.1). Although his 2024 season with the Cleveland Browns saw a drop to fourth-worst in rushing yards per game (94.6), the struggles were largely attributed to quarterback Deshaun Watson’s poor play and a season-ending injury to star running back Nick Chubb. Dorsey was ultimately let go after the Browns finished with a disappointing 3-14 record.
Mike McCarthy’s Departure and Coaching Changes
Former head coach Mike McCarthy’s exit from Dallas was reportedly due to contract negotiations falling through. According to ESPN’s Todd Archer, McCarthy wanted a five-year extension, but Jerry Jones was firm on offering only three years. Unable to reach an agreement, McCarthy walked away from the table and decided not to pursue any coaching roles for the 2025 season.
The Cowboys moved quickly, promoting offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer to head coach on a four-year deal. Schottenheimer brings extensive experience and a commitment to establishing a strong running game, which aligns with Jones’ vision for the team’s future.
In a move to maintain some continuity, Dallas extended tight ends coach Lunda Wells’ contract. Wells has been instrumental in developing players like Jake Ferguson and Luke Schoonmaker. His coaching prowess has turned mid-round draft picks into key contributors, with Ferguson even earning a Pro Bowl nod in 2023.
Draft and Roster Priorities for 2025
As the Cowboys prepare for the 2025 NFL Draft, there’s growing speculation about how they will use the 12th overall pick. One name generating buzz is Boise State running back Ashton Jeanty. His explosive playmaking ability has the potential to reinvigorate the Cowboys’ offense and provide a dynamic complement to quarterback Dak Prescott and wide receiver CeeDee Lamb. Jeanty’s talent could also make him a top contender for Rookie of the Year honors.
Dallas may also target a wide receiver in the early rounds to pair with Lamb, who signed a lucrative contract extension last August. With Brandin Cooks set to become a free agent in March, the Cowboys lack a true No. 2 option at the position.
On the defensive side, the Cowboys are expected to focus on improving their front seven, particularly against the run. Dallas ranked fourth-worst in the league in rushing defense last season, allowing 2,331 yards. First-round pick Mazi Smith has yet to live up to expectations, and veteran linebacker Eric Kendricks is set to hit free agency.
Contract Decisions and Coaching Staff Adjustments
One key contract decision involves center Brock Hoffman, who is coming off a stellar 2024 season. As a restricted free agent, Hoffman’s options are limited, but Dallas could place a tender on him, sign him to a multi-year deal, or match any offers he receives from other teams. Given his strong performance, keeping him in Dallas will likely be a priority.
The Cowboys are also considering changes to their offensive line coaching staff. Current offensive line coach Mike Solari’s future with the team is uncertain, as there have been concerns about the unit’s development. Bringing in a new coach or additional support for Solari is reportedly on the table.
As Dallas navigates coaching hires, draft decisions, and roster moves, one thing is clear: they are committed to building a team that can compete at the highest level in 2025. Whether Ken Dorsey becomes part of that equation remains to be seen, but his track record and offensive expertise make him a compelling candidate.
