He Just Got Drafted—Then He Dissed the Lions Like This?

Giants Rookie’s Hilarious Slip-Up About Lions Legend Has Fans Cringing

The NFL offseason is always an exciting time for fans. It’s a chance to meet the fresh faces of the league—rookies straight out of college, full of energy, optimism, and, occasionally… some pretty awkward moments.

One of those moments recently came from a New York Giants rookie, and let’s just say it left some Detroit Lions fans either chuckling or shaking their heads in disbelief.

A Moment That’ll Make Lions Fans Feel Ancient

During a June 3 podcast episode hosted by NFL brothers Amon-Ra and Equanimeous St. Brown, Giants rookie Cam Skattebo made an appearance to share his football journey and reflect on his path to the league. The 23-year-old running back, who played at Arizona State University, had some engaging stories and a fun vibe throughout the episode.

But it was a lighthearted game segment that created an unexpectedly cringe-worthy moment.

The St. Brown brothers had Skattebo play a guessing game where he had to name legendary NFL players based on their photos. Seems simple enough, especially for anyone who grew up around the sport. But when a picture of Calvin Johnson—a.k.a. Megatron—flashed on the screen, Skattebo seemed stumped.

“He’s one of the best receivers to ever play the game of football. He played for the Lions,” Amon-Ra St. Brown said, trying to nudge him in the right direction.

Skattebo squinted at the image, trying to place the face. Then he cautiously asked, “It’s Megatron? Is it?”

Yikes.

“You Don’t Know Megatron?!”

For those who might need a refresher, Calvin Johnson isn’t just any player. He’s considered one of the greatest wide receivers in NFL history. Nicknamed Megatron for his larger-than-life presence on the field, Johnson was a powerhouse for the Detroit Lions from 2007 to 2015. Even though the team didn’t make a deep playoff run during his era, Johnson’s dominance and athleticism made him a household name across the football world.

So when a current NFL rookie hesitated to recognize him? That’s a tough look.

It’s the kind of moment that makes longtime fans feel old—and maybe a little heartbroken. Especially in Detroit, where Johnson remains one of the most beloved sports figures the city has ever had.

To Be Fair… He Is Young

Now, before we drag Skattebo too hard, it’s important to remember the guy is only 23. That means Johnson’s peak years were during his early childhood. It’s not shocking that younger players may have a few knowledge gaps when it comes to stars from even a decade ago.

Still, it feels a bit like a rising rock star not recognizing Mick Jagger—a name that transcends generations. In that same spirit, Calvin Johnson’s name is football royalty.

To his credit, Skattebo wasn’t completely lost. He recognized Johnson’s face and eventually landed on the nickname. And let’s be honest—most rookies are bound to have a few of these “oops” moments early in their careers. It’s part of the charm.

The Road Ahead for Skattebo

Despite the podcast blunder, Skattebo has shown promise on the field. He had a standout postseason at Arizona State, where he helped rev up the team’s offense. That performance likely played a role in him being drafted by the New York Giants with the 105th overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft.

As training camp approaches, Giants fans will be watching to see how he develops. And maybe—just maybe—he’ll brush up on his NFL history in the meantime.

For now, Lions fans can laugh, cry, or both at the idea that Megatron isn’t as universally known among today’s young players as he once was.
