Following a tough 45-31 loss to the Washington Commanders in the Divisional Round, Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell offered a heartfelt reflection on his team’s performance. The Lions, who had a stellar 15-2 regular season, struggled to maintain the consistency they’d shown all year. Campbell was candid about his frustration, admitting he wasn’t entirely sure what had gone wrong.

“It was one of those odd days,” Campbell said. “Things were a little bit off.”

The game was marked by several missteps that set the tone for the Lions’ struggles. Campbell pointed to a specific play early on where a miscommunication led to a costly turnover. “The first one we had, we’re going to Amon-Ra St. Brown, and Saint just kind of trips a little bit,” he explained. “Then Jared (Goff) has to move back in the pocket, reset, and ends up getting sacked, the ball gets knocked out, and they recover it. It’s a chain reaction, a ripple effect of things happening all in one play.”

The coach emphasized that the loss wasn’t due to a single mistake but a series of missed opportunities, penalties, and an overall lack of cohesion. “We just didn’t play great,” Campbell admitted. “I mentioned we didn’t complement each other. And, look, man, that’s the same thing. At the end of the day, I didn’t have them ready.”

For the Lions, the defeat was a bitter end to an otherwise remarkable season. Despite the disappointment, Campbell’s honesty and sense of accountability have become hallmarks of his leadership. The Lions entered the playoffs with high hopes, and while they fell short this time, the experience will likely serve as a stepping stone for the future.

“It’s hard to look at it,” Campbell said, clearly carrying the weight of the loss. Now, the Lions will focus on the offseason, reflecting on lessons learned and preparing to take the next step in their journey.
