Lions Bring in Well-Traveled CB Luq Barcoo as Secondary Takes Injury Hits
The Lions just added another name to their injury-struck secondary, signing cornerback Luq Barcoo to help plug the holes. This move comes right after they picked up D.J. Miller from the Michigan Panthers — clearly, Detroit’s not messing around when it comes to shoring up the back end.
Barcoo’s NFL journey has been a wild one. Since going undrafted in 2020, he’s bounced around more than a ping pong ball — with stints on the Jaguars, Cardinals, 49ers, Chiefs, Jets, Steelers, and most recently, the Cowboys’ practice squad (who let him go in June). His actual game action? Just three games — all with Jacksonville — where he logged 10 tackles and a pass breakup.
But don’t sleep on him — Barcoo’s made some serious noise outside the NFL. In the XFL last year, he was a standout with the San Antonio Brahmas, racking up 31 tackles, a sack, and a pick on his way to being named to the All-XFL team. And back in college? Dude was a ballhawk at San Diego State, grabbing 9 interceptions in just the 2019 season. He started out at a juco (Grossmont) before making his name with the Aztecs.
Now he’s got a shot in Detroit, and the timing’s perfect. The Lions’ secondary is hurting — rookie Terrion Arnold is nursing a hamstring issue, and Ennis Rakestraw Jr. is dealing with a shoulder injury that could sideline him for a while. Barcoo may not have a guaranteed spot, but with the way injuries are stacking up, he’s got a real chance to show what he can do in camp and preseason.
It’s a “prove-it” moment — and if his XFL and college days are anything to go by, Barcoo might be ready to make the most of it.
