History Repeating? Finebaum Says Alabama’s Recruiting Feels Like Peak Saban

The Nick Saban era at Alabama may be over, but according to ESPN’s Paul Finebaum, the Crimson Tide’s latest recruiting run suggests the dynasty’s spirit is alive and well.

During a segment on The Paul Finebaum Show earlier this week, the SEC Network analyst heaped praise on Alabama’s recent string of high-profile commitments, comparing the program’s 2026 recruiting momentum to the dominance seen during Saban’s prime years.

“It’s starting to feel like 2010 or 2017 all over again,” Finebaum said. “The level of talent Alabama is bringing in, the speed at which they’re landing these elite guys — it’s as if Saban never left.”

The Tide’s 2026 class, led by multiple five-star prospects and a deep crop of top-100 recruits, currently ranks No. 2 nationally according to 247Sports — and climbing. The commitment of top wide receiver Cederian Morgan, along with blue-chip defensive backs and linemen from across the country, has signaled a resurgent recruiting machine under head coach Kalen DeBoer.

DeBoer, who took over following Saban’s retirement in early 2024, was initially met with skepticism from some fans unsure whether he could carry on the Tide’s legendary tradition. But Finebaum believes that doubt has been put to rest.

“What Kalen DeBoer is doing now is more than just a solid follow-up,” Finebaum said. “He’s reestablishing Alabama as the gold standard in recruiting — just like it was under Saban.”

While DeBoer’s offensive pedigree and championship success at Washington helped secure his place in Tuscaloosa, many wondered if he could match the relentless recruiting approach that made Saban a legend. With the recent commitments of several out-of-state stars — including players from Florida, California, and Texas — Finebaum says the answer is clear.

“They’re not just beating SEC rivals — they’re beating everybody, just like Saban used to,” Finebaum noted. “And that sends a message: Alabama isn’t going anywhere.”

Players and analysts alike have pointed to the continuity in Alabama’s culture and expectations as a key reason recruits continue to flock to Tuscaloosa.

“You come to Bama to compete with the best, to be the best,” said 5-star offensive tackle commit Jalen Rivers Jr. “That hasn’t changed — Coach DeBoer just picked up where Coach Saban left off.”

As Alabama eyes a return to the College Football Playoff in 2025, the program’s recruiting surge could prove crucial in sustaining its national title aspirations. And if Finebaum is right, fans may soon be watching a new era of Crimson Tide dominance unfold — one built in the shadow of a legend, but ready to cast its own.
