Lions’ “Sonic & Knuckles” Still NFL’s Most Dangerous RB Duo
The Detroit Lions struck gold when they paired Jahmyr Gibbs and David Montgomery in 2023 – and two seasons later, they’re still the most explosive running back tandem in football.
The Dynamic Duo
Gibbs (aka “Sonic” for his blazing speed) and Montgomery (“Knuckles” for his bruising style) have been terrorizing defenses since day one. In their first season together, they nearly became just the 8th duo in NFL history to each rush for 1,000 yards – with Gibbs falling just 55 yards short.
By the Numbers
– Combined 2,200+ scrimmage yards each season
– Both scoring double-digit touchdowns yearly
– Gibbs: 2x Pro Bowler with home-run hitting ability
– Montgomery: Model of consistency with six straight strong seasons
Still the Best
Bleacher Report recently ranked them as the NFL’s top RB duo – again. “They’re the complete package,” analyst Moe Moton wrote. “Gibbs brings the flash, Montgomery brings the smash, and together they’re unstoppable.”
Even with offensive coordinator Ben Johnson gone, expect this pair to keep dominating. As Moton put it: “Until someone proves otherwise, this is the best backfield in football.”
What’s Next?
The only thing missing from their resume? That elusive dual 1,000-yard season. Given their track record, it might just happen in 2025.
