How Much Is Kerby Joseph Worth? Our Take on His Future Lions Extension

What’s Next for Kerby Joseph’s Contract with the Lions?

The Detroit Lions have a big decision to make when it comes to safety Kerby Joseph. After a breakout 2024 season, where he quickly became one of the best defensive backs in the league, it’s clear this guy is someone they’ll want to keep around for the long haul.

Even though Joseph’s built a bit of a reputation for being a “dirty player,” his talent is undeniable. At just 24 years old, he finished sixth in the Defensive Player of the Year voting   a huge achievement, especially for someone in his position. It’s no surprise that Lions GM Brad Holmes will likely prioritize locking him in.

However, there’s a twist. The Houston Texans just handed Jalen Pitre a three-year, $39 million contract   and he hasn’t proven himself like Joseph has. With salaries rising around the NFL, this could make negotiations tricky.

Joseph still has a year left on his current deal, but it’s not too early to think about what an extension could look like. Since Antoine Winfield Jr. is currently the highest-paid safety with over $21 million a year, Joseph could reasonably ask for a similar number.

A possible deal might look like three years, $58 million, with a player option after two years. That would give Joseph top-tier money now, while leaving room to cash in again in a couple of years if he keeps playing at this level.

For the Lions, this move would secure a defensive star before prices go up even more. Joseph might want to wait and bet on himself, but an offer like that could be tough to turn down   especially since, as a former third-round pick, he hasn’t hit this kind of payday before.

One thing’s for sure: Detroit needs to get this done soon.
