How the Lions Can Address Their Biggest Depth Issue at Safety

The Detroit Lions have one of the NFL’s best starting safety duos in Brian Branch and Kerby Joseph. But beyond those two, the depth chart gets thin fast. With Ifeatu Melifonwu heading to Miami and Brandon Joseph waived late last season, Detroit’s backup safeties currently have just nine combined games of NFL experience.

The team could explore multiple ways to strengthen this position. One option is trying out newly signed cornerback Rock Ya-Sin at safety during offseason workouts. In free agency, veterans like Quandre Diggs and Justin Simmons remain available. The NFL Draft also offers intriguing prospects, including Nick Emmanwori from South Carolina and Malaki Starks from Georgia.

With Brad Holmes focused on building a deep, versatile defense, expect the Lions to make a move at safety before the season kicks off.
