The Detroit Lions are losing another member of their 2021 draft class, as defensive back Ifeatu Melifonwu has signed a one-year, $4 million deal with the Miami Dolphins.
Melifonwu, originally drafted as a cornerback, transitioned to safety during his time in Detroit. While injuries limited his early career, he showed promise in 2023, finishing with two interceptions, three sacks, and a forced fumble. However, another injury-plagued 2024 season kept him off the field until Week 16.
With his departure, the Lions are expected to receive a seventh-round compensatory pick in the 2026 NFL Draft—unless they sign a free agent of equal value.
