Putting the Loss on Himself
Baltimore Ravens running back Derrick Henry didn’t sugarcoat things after Monday night’s tough loss to the Detroit Lions. His fourth-quarter fumble swung momentum, and the veteran back shouldered the blame.
“I’ve got to be better and go back to work. I apologized to teammates, coaches,” Henry said.
A Rare Struggle for a Veteran Star
Henry’s track record makes this slump even more surprising. Before this season, the 31-year-old had lost only two fourth-quarter fumbles in his entire career. Now? He’s fumbled in all three games of 2025, including late-game mistakes in both of Baltimore’s losses — to the Bills in Week 1 and the Lions in Week 3.
The Weight of Expectations
Coming off a 1,921-yard season in 2024, Henry looked rejuvenated after joining Baltimore. He entered 2025 as the NFL’s active leader in rushing yards, expected to be a cornerstone of the Ravens’ offense. Instead, his ball-security issues have become the defining storyline of the young season.
“It’s just crazy,” Henry admitted. “Three fumbles straight. I’m trying every day to fix the problem that keeps occurring. I’m my worst critic so I try not to beat myself up too much but it’s hard not to when I’m consistently doing something.”
What’s Next for Henry and the Ravens
Despite the struggles, Henry remains a crucial part of Baltimore’s identity. His ability to reset mentally will be just as important as his work on the field. For the Ravens to stay competitive in the AFC, their star back needs to rediscover the form that’s made him one of the league’s most feared runners.
