Injuries Hit Lions’ D-Line — Who Steps Up with McNeill, Onwuzurike Out?

The Detroit Lions are facing early adversity in training camp, with two key defensive linemen — Alim McNeill and Levi Onwuzurike — sidelined due to injuries. The absence of both players has raised immediate concerns about depth and disruption up front, especially for a defense that took major strides last season.

McNeill, coming off a career-best campaign, has become one of the Lions’ most disruptive interior defenders. His absence leaves a noticeable gap in the middle of the defensive line. Meanwhile, Onwuzurike, once a promising high draft pick, has struggled with injuries over his short NFL career and was looking to solidify his role heading into the season.

Now, the pressure is on Detroit’s coaching staff to identify who’s ready to step up.

Veteran DT DJ Reader could be asked to do more, bringing leadership and physicality to the interior. Brodric Martin, entering his second year, has shown flashes and may finally get his chance to prove he belongs in the regular rotation.

Then there’s rookie Mekhi Wingo — the fourth-round pick out of LSU who’s been steadily gaining attention with his motor and versatility. The Lions are also giving long looks to undrafted players like Khristian Boyd, whose size and strength have surprised coaches during early reps.

Defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn now faces the challenge of mixing and matching his personnel to maintain continuity while the starters recover. While the injuries are far from ideal, the situation also presents an opportunity for young players to earn roles and for depth pieces to emerge.

In a year where expectations are sky-high for Detroit, how the team handles this early test on the defensive line could be a preview of the grit and adaptability they’ll need all season.
