Inside the Lions’ Den: The 2025 Draft Target No One Saw Coming

As the 2025 NFL Draft draws near, the buzz surrounding the Detroit Lions is steadily heating up—and some of the rumors are starting to paint a clearer picture of what their strategy might look like. And if you’ve followed this team under GM Brad Holmes, you already know: it begins in the trenches.

According to ESPN’s Matt Miller, the Lions are eyeing the interior offensive line early in the draft. While that might not turn heads like a flashy wide receiver or edge rusher, this move could be one of the most critical to Detroit’s continued rise.

The key reason? Frank Ragnow. The Pro Bowl center has been the bedrock of the Lions’ offensive line for years, but injuries have taken their toll. With Ragnow likely approaching the final stretch of his career, Detroit appears to be thinking ahead—and they might already have a name circled on the draft board.

Enter Grey Zabel, a versatile lineman from North Dakota State who’s been strongly tied to the Lions at pick No. 28. Zabel checks all the boxes for a Holmes-style player: smart, physical, and able to play both guard and center, giving Detroit a valuable long-term option in the heart of their offensive front.

It’s not a pick that will dominate headlines—but it’s the kind of move that sets up future success.

Not All About Offense

That said, don’t sleep on the defensive side of the ball. The Lions still need a consistent threat opposite Aidan Hutchinson, and Detroit has been doing its homework on edge rushers.

But there’s another position worth watching closely, according to Miller: nickel corner.

While the team did address cornerback in the offseason, there’s still a gap at slot corner—a role that’s become crucial in today’s pass-heavy NFL. “Don’t be surprised if they use one of their top four picks to land a slot corner,” Miller notes, highlighting Detroit’s focus on players who can cover quick receivers and step up in run defense.

Bottom Line

Don’t expect fireworks from the Lions in this year’s draft—but do expect them to keep building smart. Whether it’s safeguarding Jared Goff, preparing for life after Ragnow, or plugging defensive holes, this draft could quietly become a cornerstone of Detroit’s future.
