Governor Healey Says Trump’s Anti-Science Moves Are Hurting the U.S. and Helping China
Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey didn’t hold back during an MSNBC interview where she called out former President Donald Trump’s policies for damaging America’s scientific progress and, surprisingly, boosting China in the process.
Talking with host Mika Brzezinski, Healey pointed to Trump’s funding cuts to universities and hospitals, saying they’re leading to massive layoffs of scientists and the shutdown of crucial medical research.
“This isn’t just about Harvard,” Healey said. “I stand with them, but this goes way beyond one school. UMass Medical had to lay off 200 faculty members and take back offers to 80 grad students. These are people working on things like cures for cancer and Alzheimer’s and all that work is being cut off.”
But what really shocked her? The fallout is helping China. Healey explained that China is swooping in to hire the very scientists and students the U.S. is pushing out. “They’re saying, ‘Come to China we’ll give you the lab, the funding, the staff.’ And meanwhile, we’re over here losing the people who drive innovation.”
She added, “Trump claims he’s putting America first, but this is making us fall behind. It’s heartbreaking.”
Healey also warned that more researchers and students are leaving the country to do their work elsewhere because of this hostile environment. “It’s dangerous, destabilizing, and pushing the U.S. in the wrong direction.”
Later in the interview, Healey and Brzezinski also talked about how Massachusetts is trying to support small businesses struggling with Trump-era tariffs.
