Lions Fired Up by Kelvin Sheppard’s Passionate Leadership on Defense
The Detroit Lions’ defense seems poised for a serious leap forward in 2025 — and much of that optimism surrounds new defensive coordinator Kelvin Sheppard.
Sheppard, who was promoted internally, is already earning praise from players for his leadership style. Defensive backs Amik Robertson and rookie Terrion Arnold both shared their impressions after Saturday’s practice, highlighting how Sheppard connects with the team. “He’s relatable, and honestly, he still looks like he could suit up and play with us,” said Arnold, referring to Sheppard’s football IQ and physical presence.
While Aaron Glenn, now the Jets’ head coach, brought energy during his time in Detroit, Sheppard is already showing a next-level intensity.
“We should be playing at a high level. And for me to say anything else is unacceptable, and my players know that. It’s a standard here,” Sheppard said. “It’s been set before, and we’re raising that bar.”
He added that he isn’t into setting specific goals just yet. “I told the room during my first speech: I’m not setting expectations or goals. It’s about how we attack every single day.”
The early signs are promising. Detroit’s defense has looked fast and aggressive through the first week of camp, swarming to the ball and playing with purpose.
“I know the makeup of this group,” Sheppard continued. “We have to be in a race to improve. Not just using that as coach-speak — I mean it. A real race to get better every day.”
He acknowledged the growth process isn’t the same for everyone. “You’ve got a guy like Aidan Hutchinson working toward an All-Pro season, and then a young guy like Ahmed (Hassanein) who’s still learning the basics. It’s our job as coaches to meet them where they are and help them all reach that high bar.”
With talent like Hutchinson and Brian Branch setting the tone, and Sheppard’s demanding but inspiring approach, Detroit’s defense could be on the verge of something special.
