You know things were rough when even the new guy is speaking up.
After the Detroit Lions’ ugly 34–7 loss to the Chargers in the Hall of Fame Game, linebacker Ben Niemann didn’t mince words about the team’s performance. The veteran LB, signed this offseason to bring experience and leadership, called the Lions’ sloppy play exactly what it was—unacceptable.
“I think a lot of us were just sloppy. It’s unacceptable,” Niemann said after the game. And honestly? He’s right.
The Lions gave the ball away five times, committed penalty after penalty, and generally looked out of sync all night. While most of the starters sat, the backups failed to show the discipline and intensity that Dan Campbell demands—and Niemann, a guy trying to earn his spot, clearly didn’t like what he saw.
This wasn’t just about a loss—it was about setting a tone. And Niemann knows it.
He’s not some rookie trying to find his voice—he’s a former Super Bowl champion who’s played in high-pressure games. That kind of presence is exactly what Detroit needs in its linebacker room, especially with young guys like Jack Campbell and Derrick Barnes still developing.
If Niemann’s comments are any indication, expect the Lions’ practices this week to be loud, intense, and focused on cleaning up the mess. And if things don’t change quickly, players who aren’t pulling their weight might find themselves watching from the sidelines—or worse.
