Detroit Lions fans might want to hold off on buying that No. 26 jersey—because Jahmyr Gibbs is making a switch.
After two seasons wearing No. 26, the Lions’ dynamic running back is changing his number to 0 for the 2025 season. And no, it’s not for some deep personal reason. According to Gibbs himself, it was all about preference.
“I hated 26,” Gibbs said bluntly at his youth football camp, per ESPN’s Eric Woodyard. “When I got drafted, the options were like 26, 33, 35—so I just went with 26. As soon as I could change it, I did. I wanted No. 1, but Jamo [Jameson Williams] already had it. So I went with the next closest thing.”
He even admitted he was nervous about how the “0” would look on him, unsure if it’d be “too big or too small.” But now that he’s seen it on his jersey, he’s happy with the fit. No promises he’ll wear it forever—but it’s definitely a major upgrade in his book.
The number swap is part of a broader Lions jersey shake-up. Williams is switching from No. 9 to No. 1, while cornerback Terrion Arnold, who wore 0 as a rookie, is now going with No. 6. New additions like D.J. Reed (No. 4) and rookies such as Tate Ratledge (No. 69) and Isaac TeSlaa (No. 18) are also picking out fresh digits.
As for Gibbs, he’s coming off a monster sophomore season—1,412 rushing yards, 16 touchdowns on the ground, and another 517 yards plus four scores through the air. If the new number gives him any extra juice, the rest of the league better watch out.
