Jake Bates might not have the typical NFL kicker resume, but the Detroit Lions believe he could end up being one of the best to ever do it.
After a wild journey—from college soccer player to brick salesman to breakout star in the UFL—Bates has impressed the Lions enough to earn serious praise from top coaches heading into the 2025 season. Special teams coordinator Dave Fipp didn’t hold back: “I think he’s got a chance to be one of the best who ever played.”
That’s high praise for someone who hasn’t even played a full NFL season yet.
Head coach Dan Campbell is also sold. “Love Bates,” he said. “He’s wired the right way, puts in the work, and doesn’t let mistakes shake him. He keeps things simple and fixes what needs to be fixed.”
After a long year of kicking both in the UFL and during Detroit’s 2024 training camp, Bates is getting some needed rest before jumping into a revamped kickoff format in 2025—one that puts more pressure on kickers to control field position with returns back in play.
But with a strong leg, a sharp mind, and the full belief of the coaching staff, Bates is heading into training camp with momentum and massive potential. If he keeps rising, Detroit may have found its next special teams star.
