MLive Photographer Jake May Wins International Recognition for Stunning Photos
Jake May, a photojournalist for MLive/The Flint Journal, has earned top honors in the prestigious Pictures of the Year International competition. May’s powerful images earned him two finalist spots in the 2024 awards—one in the Sports Life and Recreational Sports category and the other in the Science & Natural History category.
May’s photo of Larry Benjamin, an 83-year-old Detroit Lions fan in hospice care who dyed his hair blue to match his favorite player, Amon-Ra St. Brown, gained international attention. Benjamin’s emotional connection to the Lions as he neared the end of his life struck a chord with many, showcasing the deep role sports play in community bonding. May said, “It’s our job as journalists to dig deeper,” ensuring that Benjamin’s full story was shared, not just his viral moment.
The solar eclipse photo of kindergarten students from Myers Elementary in Grand Blanc, Michigan, also earned a finalist nod. The students were captured gazing at the sky in awe, their safety glasses hand-decorated by the children. This poignant image was later featured in Time Magazine’s Top 100 Photos of 2024.
May, who has been with MLive for 12 years, attributes his success to mentors who shaped his career, including high school journalism teacher C.E. Sikkenga and college professor Kent Miller. This is the first time he’s reached the finalist stage, having previously received multiple awards from the competition.
May’s accolades reflect his dedication to both local journalism and the human connection behind every story he tells.
