The Detroit Lions may have lost their offensive mastermind in Ben Johnson this offseason, but they’re gaining a new wave of optimism — and it starts with wide receiver Jameson Williams. According to new offensive coordinator John Morton, the 24-year-old is ready to take the league by storm.
“It’s Going to Be a Breakout Year for Him”
Morton isn’t one to mince words. When asked about Williams during a Tuesday media session, the new OC couldn’t hide his excitement.
“I’m so excited to see him this year,” Morton said. “It’s going to be a breakout year for him. So, I can’t wait, man. I can’t wait.”
That’s a strong statement — and one that carries weight coming from a veteran coach tasked with keeping Detroit’s offense humming after Johnson’s departure to Chicago.
The Numbers Speak — and Promise More
Williams’ 2024 campaign was his best yet: 58 receptions, 1,001 yards, and seven touchdowns over 15 games. Those are solid stats, but Morton and the Lions believe that was just the beginning.
He’s been called “unbelievable” this offseason, and if that momentum carries into the fall, the Lions could be looking at their new go-to weapon in the passing game.
Betting on Their Guy — and Doubling Down
Earlier this spring, whispers emerged that Williams might be on the trade block ahead of the 2025 draft. Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated even listed him as a possible candidate. But GM Brad Holmes shut that talk down fast.
“We never entertained that idea,” Holmes said. “[Williams] is still scratching the surface. I do think he’s got more in him.”
The Lions backed that belief up by picking up his fifth-year option, securing him through 2026. In hindsight, that loyalty seems to be paying off.
From Setbacks to Stardom
Williams’ journey hasn’t been smooth. A four-game suspension for gambling and early injuries limited him to just 18 games across his first two seasons. But now, with a clean bill of health and confidence brewing on all sides, he’s finally on track to fulfill the promise that made him the 12th overall pick in 2022.
If he does break out, the Lions’ offense could be even more dangerous than it was last year — and help Detroit make a serious push for their first-ever Super Bowl appearance.
The Bottom Line
Morton’s bold call puts the spotlight firmly on Jameson Williams, and for good reason. The talent has always been there. Now, the opportunity, the system, and the support are too.
Lions fans, get ready. Williams is coming — and he’s bringing the fireworks with him.
